Can you make a decent living being a full-time author of romance novels?

So saying that your novels are picked up by a publisher and so you have no trouble getting published--how much of a living can you make from writing romance novels full-time? Thanks! Can you make a decent living being a full-time author of romance novels?
Only about 5% of authors make a living at it. The rest have regular jobs and write in their spare time. If you go to Harlequin's site, they have an outline of what they expect in a romance novel. Very helpful. Pax-C
Well, I looked into writing for Mills and Boon...who are MASSIVE in the romance industry and I saw that no...you cannot. They pat badly..just a couple of thousand per book at most and then a tiny share of the sales...one author who was a well know writer for them, had never been able to give up teaching..she had to do it in addition to writing.

But don' let the money be your guide...you will learn and improve through your efforts and may write a best seller one day!Can you make a decent living being a full-time author of romance novels?
Some do, most don't.
despite the bunches of books you see when you go to the bookstore, only a very few, very famous, authors make a living writing. yes, it could happen, but it is not common. Can you make a decent living being a full-time author of romance novels?
hey im gonna try it (not romance novels though but novels). and if not. I guess i'll be the only hobo under the bridge with a typewriter. haha
You can't. The odds of doing so these days are so slim, that most first-time authors rarely make back their advance in book sales--let alone be able to live off their income independently.
Most writers who make a living from their books don't make their living from one book or a few books, but from a lot of books. Sure, there are authors who get on the bestseller list and become rich on a book or two, but most make a little off this book, a little off that book, and a little off another. Issac Asimov wrote over 400 books, and while he certainly did well, he wasn't as wealthy as JK Rowling and her 7 books. In romance, particularly, most of the people who make their living at it make that living because they have written a dozen or so books.
not much of one
