Why are there so many romance novels at the grocery store?

Does that mean that women don't want to fantasize about settling down with the average shlub? If they did, wouldn't there be more bookcovers showing a middle aged, balding guy with glasses and a spare tire- making grunting noises on top of a flabby, pasty nag?Why are there so many romance novels at the grocery store?
As a woman and a romance writer, I suppose we can liken the presence of romance novels to the presence of "gentlemen's" magazines. While the most explicit aren't out on the shelves, we see beautiful, sexy, scantily-clad young women on nearly every cover - even women's magazines exhibit the same types of covergirls. Does this mean that men don't want to fantacize about settling down with the average woman? It seems each gender's supposed "fantasies" enjoy exposure in the supermarket - and elsewhere. People have fantasies, but that doesn't mean their realities need be disappointing; knowing the difference is healthy and necessary.
supposedly it would be because that's what a majority of people who go to the grocery store like to read - otherwise they wouldn't have them; it has to be because there is money to be made from selling them. nice description by the way - but the idea is to know the difference between fantasy and reality. Why are there so many romance novels at the grocery store?
wow...bitter much?

They are marketed to women, and women usually do the shopping.
probably because the movies show that people just lock eyes and fall in love and get married and stuff like that plus a romantic dinner has lots of different ingredients which will probably make then want to cook a romantic dinner for there husbands and stuffWhy are there so many romance novels at the grocery store?
I so know what you mean! There's always like a thousand romance novels and then out of the corner of your eye, you'll see a little, pitiful-looking novel lying on the floor, partially hidden under the shelf but that's it. Just romance. That's probably why my mom enjoys going to the grocery store so much. And plus, we always know what to get her for a gift. Haven't had to worry about Christmas or her birthday in years....
Ever notice that the grocery stores tend to have popular mass market paperbacks. Many of the popular romance authors only publish to mass market paperback so have a bit of an edge over other popular mass market paperbacks (many of which have been out for a year or two). Directly to mass market occurs with certain mystery and fantasy series as well but they aren't up there in popularity as the romance and the best sellers.
