Is it just me or are romance novels mostly read by women and feminine/gay men?

Just asking out of curiosity. I've noticed that it's usually chicks and occasionally feminine/gay men that read those types of novels.

No I believe men secretly read there wifes romance novels when they are asleep. Guys can pretend to be buff and big but there gushy inside.
I concur with the statement that romance novels are generally read by women, but I haven't observed many "feminine/gay men" to read at all (perhaps because I don't know very many). Either way, it's just an observation, and observations are most always biased based upon the circumstances.



Many romance novels are written to appeal to women more than men, hence the trend. However, some men do pick up one of them once in a while (including myself), but usually only if he reads frequently; you won't often see the stereotypical football-watching father indulging in a love story written for middle-aged women.Is it just me or are romance novels mostly read by women and feminine/gay men?
It depends on the book. Some books (e.g Twilight) are written specifically for teenage girls, and others are written specifically for gay men. However, a lot of books have some kind of romance in them, either between primary characters or as a back-story or background. It's hard to avoid, really.
it is common for women/gay men to read these books because thats the crowd that they are selling to ... im sure that many varites of people read romance novles . you are not ignorant... you just see the people that most commonly read these books ... if i were a straght man that was into romance books i dont that i would openly announce it to the world ....Is it just me or are romance novels mostly read by women and feminine/gay men?
Um...it's because romance novels are generally written for women (not all, note this).

There are often romances in books aimed toward a more masculine audience. One of my favorite books- A Farewell to Arms by the quite manly Ernest Hemingway- is both a war novel and a tender romance.
